Stephen King’s IT – Where the Nightmare Began

Published in September 1986, Stephen King’s IT takes readers to the fictional town of Derry, Maine. At the heart of the story is the Losers’ Club, a group of childhood friends who encounter an ancient evil capable of taking different forms and exploiting their deepest fears. Years later, the group must honour a promise to return to Derry if the creature ever resurfaces.

Although IT can appear in many forms, its most famous identity is Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

That image proved impossible to forget. The apparently friendly clown becomes a gateway to something far more sinister, while Derry itself gradually emerges as an essential part of the story. Consequently, Pennywise has become one of the most recognisable characters associated with Stephen King.

Tim Curry Becomes Pennywise in 1990

Four years after the novel appeared, IT came to television.

The 1990 ABC miniseries adapted King’s story across two parts, with Tim Curry delivering an unforgettable performance as Pennywise. The production follows the Losers both as children and as adults returning to Derry to confront the creature they believed they had defeated decades earlier.

Rather than hiding Curry beneath an elaborate monster design, this Pennywise often resembles a traditional circus clown. That makes his transformation from apparently playful entertainer to murderous predator particularly effective.

For a generation of viewers, Tim Curry was Pennywise. His performance helped move the character beyond the pages of King’s novel and into popular culture. Even decades later, the 1990 version remains a favourite among horror collectors.

Pennywise Returns to Cinemas in IT

A new generation discovered Derry when Andy Muschietti’s IT arrived in cinemas in 2017.

This time, Bill Skarsgård took on the role of Pennywise. The film concentrates on the Losers’ childhood confrontation with IT, updating that section of King’s story to the late 1980s.

Skarsgård’s Pennywise provided a dramatically different interpretation of the character. His antique-looking clown costume, unsettling movements and distinctive appearance quickly created another horror icon.

The red balloon also became closely associated with this incarnation of Pennywise. As a result, the imagery from the 2017 film has inspired an enormous amount of Pennywise merchandise and collectibles.

The Losers Return in IT Chapter Two

The story continued with IT Chapter Two in 2019.

Just as in King’s novel, the Losers are now adults. Their lives have taken them away from Derry, but the return of IT forces them to reunite and fulfil the promise they made as children.

Andy Muschietti returned to direct, while Bill Skarsgård once again portrayed Pennywise. The two films therefore form a complete modern adaptation built around the Losers’ encounters with IT as children and adults. Stephen King’s official filmography records the releases of the two chapters in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

Together, the films introduced Pennywise to an enormous new audience. They also transformed Skarsgård’s version into one of the defining horror characters of the 21st century.

IT: Welcome to Derry

But Derry had more stories to tell.

IT: Welcome to Derry premiered on HBO in October 2025 and expands the world established by Andy Muschietti’s two feature films. The series moves back to 1962, decades before the events depicted in the 2017 movie, exploring an earlier period in Derry’s disturbing history.

Rather than simply retelling King’s novel again, Welcome to Derry explores the mythology surrounding the town and the entity behind Pennywise. HBO and Warner Bros. describe the series as being based on King’s IT while expanding the vision established in IT and IT Chapter Two.

For collectors, it has also created a whole new generation of Pennywise merchandise. New designs sit alongside collectibles inspired by both the 1990 Tim Curry incarnation and the modern films.
