Scream Reinvents the Slasher Movie

Directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, Scream arrived in 1996 and gave the slasher movie a very different kind of killer. The residents of Woodsboro weren’t living in a world where horror movies didn’t exist. Instead, they knew the rules.

At the centre of the story is Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell. She becomes the target of a masked killer who taunts victims over the telephone before attacking them. Meanwhile, characters including Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley became an essential part of the series.

The film combined genuine horror with dark humour and an awareness of the genre’s conventions. As a result, Screamhelped revitalise the slasher movie and introduced audiences to one of horror’s most unforgettable faces.

The Ghost Face Mask Existed Before Scream

One of the most fascinating parts of the Scream and Ghost Face story is that the mask wasn’t originally created for the movie.

The design was created by Fun World as part of its Fantastic Faces range and sold as a Halloween mask before Screamentered production. During development of the film, the distinctive mask was discovered and eventually became the face of its mysterious killer.

Rather than owning the underlying Ghost Face mask design, the filmmakers licensed it from Fun World for use in Scream. The costume was then completed with the familiar black hood and flowing robes.

Consequently, Ghost Face occupies an unusual position in horror history. The character and the Scream films became enormously influential, while the mask also continued to exist as a licensed character beyond the movies.

Today, the elongated white face, open mouth and black hood are recognised around the world. Few horror images are more immediately identifiable.

Ghost Face Returns Throughout the Scream Films

The original film launched a franchise that has continued across multiple generations.

However, Ghost Face is different from horror villains such as Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees. There isn’t simply one person behind the mask. Instead, the identity and motives of the killer can change from film to film.

That mystery became one of the defining elements of the series. Audiences know what Ghost Face looks and sounds like, but they don’t necessarily know who is underneath the costume.

The familiar telephone calls are another essential ingredient. Roger L. Jackson’s distinctive Ghost Face voice has accompanied the character throughout the franchise, helping turn a simple question — “What’s your favourite scary movie?” — into one of modern horror’s most recognisable lines.
